INTRODUCTION
This NSF-funded program aims to address the increasing demand for a qualified workforce in manufacturing by providing skill training to teachers, and supporting school programs with hands-on and manufacturing foci. The enhanced school environment would be suitable and attractive to students, since they can relate the experiences to everyday examples, potential employment, and even advanced STEM study/careers.
This 3-year program will involve a total of 36-teachers and focus on three main aspects of manufacturing: fabrication processes, materials, and metrology. A 6-week summer research program will comprise of orientations and informative discussions on laboratory safety, research methodology, team brainstorming and objective setting, hands-on research activities supported by graduate/undergraduate students, seminars, and facility tours to numerous departments and research centers.
Additional teachers are added to the training program with funding from Gene Haas Foundation.
PARTICIPANTS
- Pre-service teachers who are attending universities /colleges in Texas with an education major.
COMPENSATION
- Pre-service teacher will be paid a stipend of $5,250 upon program completion.
- Additional travel /accommodation allowance is available for a qualified candidate.
- All fees for consumable, seminar, handout, software license, and laboratory usage will be covered; no contribution from participants’ schools is required for training.
